A tragic accident involving a vehicle in President Bola Tinubu’s convoy has claimed three lives, including a teenager, during a project commissioning visit to Bayelsa State.
A presidential convoy vehicle lost control and crashed into several structures at Obogoro on Friday, resulting in the deaths of three people during President Bola Tinubu’s one-day working visit to Bayelsa State. The accident occurred as the convoy was traveling toward the Angiama-Oporoma Bridge for a project commissioning ceremony. According to eyewitnesses, the final vehicle in the motorcade suddenly veered off the road, slamming into a mechanic workshop and nearby buildings before being halted by concrete slabs left behind from the construction of the Dr. Goodluck Jonathan Bridge.
The victims of the crash have been identified as a 17-year-old girl and two adult males. Following the impact, the scene became a flashpoint for civil unrest as security operatives quickly evacuated the driver of the damaged vehicle. When local residents gathered to protest and attempted to approach the wreckage, police reportedly fired teargas to disperse the crowd. Tensions remained high in the area as the bodies were recovered, though the Bayelsa State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement regarding the cause of the mechanical failure or the status of the investigation.
This fatal incident added to a day of logistical and security challenges during the presidential visit to Governor Douye Diri’s state. Earlier that day, the Nigerian Navy confirmed the arrest of personnel involved in a public altercation with fellow military officers in a separate event during the President’s tour. While the visit was intended to showcase infrastructure achievements, the loss of life has cast a somber shadow over the administration’s activities in the Niger Delta region.
