Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has vowed that any attempts to rig the 2027 general elections will be resisted through lawful and legitimate means.
Speaking in Enugu on Wednesday, Mr Obi called for early verification of academic records of candidates, arguing that such measures would help prevent pre-election disputes.
He said those who once benefitted from Nigeria’s democracy were now undermining it “either through coercion or gangsterism,” insisting that electoral malpractice must not be allowed to stand.
Mr Obi made the remarks while formally announcing his defection to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, which is backed by an opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 polls.
“We can’t allow this to happen, we will resist it,” he said, warning that political actors celebrating electoral fraud should not expect silence. “And we are saying that those planning to rig elections in Nigeria come 2027, we will resist it by every means lawful and legitimate,” he added.
