Kano State Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo is under pressure to resign amid political tensions triggered by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection from the NNPP to the APC.
The Kano State Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, is facing mounting pressure from top government officials to resign following his refusal to align with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Governor Yusuf’s move on Monday has sparked internal tensions within the state government, with Gwarzo choosing instead to remain loyal to Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, leader of the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
Sources told Daily Trust that discussions are ongoing among lawmakers loyal to the governor over the possibility of initiating impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor should he decline to step down voluntarily. The unfolding political realignment has reportedly placed loyalties under scrutiny within the Kano State political structure.
Kano State has witnessed a similar situation in the past. In August 2018, Professor Hafiz Abubakar resigned as deputy governor after a breakdown in his relationship with then Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, following moves by lawmakers to impeach him. His resignation occurred before the impeachment process was concluded.
