Tension as soldier accused of killing YabaTech student in Lagos

A Nigerian soldier has been accused of fatally shooting a Yaba College of Technology student, Balogun Sultan, during a security operation in Lagos, sparking grief among his family and classmates.

A Nigerian soldier has been accused of fatally shooting Balogun Sultan, a National Diploma II student of Yaba College of Technology, during a security operation in Lagos. SaharaReporters gathered that the incident occurred as the student was returning home after an examination. Until his death, Sultan was enrolled in the institution’s distance learning programme, which required students to attend physical lectures for two weeks before sitting examinations.

“We only come to school for examinations as our course is usually online. Before examinations, we would have two weeks of physical lecture. Once we are done with the examination, we do not come to school again,” one student said, his voice trembling. Another student described Sultan’s routine journey home: “The victim was going home when the incident happened. He stays on the Lagos Island. He takes a vehicle from WAEC bus stop, and from there he would take another vehicle to the Island to get to his house. He was going home when the incident happened.”

The WAEC bus stop, located near the office of the West African Examinations Council, is typically busy with students and commuters. Classmates and family members have since been thrown into mourning as they struggle to come to terms with the loss, while calls grow for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
