Tanzania has officially canceled its upcoming independence day celebrations, originally scheduled for December 9th. The government announced that the funds will be repurposed to repair infrastructure damaged during widespread unrest that followed a disputed presidential election last month.
The move comes as the opposition continues to challenge President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s landslide victory, alleging the vote was fraudulent and condemning the violent state response to subsequent protests.
