Syria signals readiness for economic revival as U.S. sanctions near potential repeal – Analysis

Syria has applauded the U.S. Senate’s push to repeal the Caesar Act, calling it a step toward economic recovery and renewed diplomatic ties.

The Syrian government has welcomed the U.S. Senate’s decision to include a provision in its budget bill calling for the repeal of the “Caesar Act,” a sanctions law enacted in 2019 over crimes committed by Syria’s former regime. State media outlet SANA reported that Damascus said the sanctions had caused “severe humanitarian and economic repercussions” and negatively affected civilian life.

Syria’s Foreign Ministry praised the U.S. approach, describing it as “a constructive step toward correcting the course of bilateral relations,” while expressing hopes for future humanitarian and economic cooperation.

Defense Minister Major-General Murhaf Abu Qasra said the move signaled “Syria’s return to its rightful place,” calling it the beginning of “a new chapter defined by work, reconstruction, and stability.”

Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani added that lifting the sanctions would “restore the dignity of the Syrian people and their right to rebuild.”
