Swedish PM faces backlash for admitting use of ChatGPT in governance

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is under fire for admitting he regularly uses artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT and France’s LeChat in government work.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is under fire for admitting he regularly uses artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT and France’s LeChat in government work. In an interview with Dagen industri, Kristersson, who leads the Moderate Party, said he uses AI “quite often” for a second opinion and alternative viewpoints, asking, “What have others done? And should we think the complete opposite?”

The admission triggered backlash from experts and commentators. Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet accused him of succumbing to the “oligarchs’ AI psychosis.” Simone Fischer-Hübner, a researcher at Karlstad University, warned against using AI for sensitive matters.

Kristersson’s spokesperson, Tom Samuelsson, clarified that no security-sensitive information is shared with AI, stating, “It is used more as a ballpark.”

Virginia Dignum, professor of responsible AI at Umeå University, warned: “The more he relies on AI for simple things, the bigger the risk of an overconfidence in the system… We didn’t vote for ChatGPT.”

The debate highlights growing concerns over AI’s role in leadership.
