Suspended MSP Colin Smyth faces new charges over a secret camera allegation, which he strongly denies.

Suspended South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth has been charged by police over allegations he placed a secret camera in the Scottish Parliament, the PA news agency reports.

Smyth, who was arrested on 5 August and separately charged with possession of indecent images, was suspended from Scottish Labour earlier this month. His Holyrood pass was deactivated on Thursday, and he is now listed as an independent MSP.

“This allegation has come as an utter shock and one I strongly refute,” Smyth said on Friday, adding he was “fully cooperating” but described the release of his address as “devastating” and damaging to his health.

Scottish Parliament presiding officer Alison Johnstone confirmed Police Scotland carried out a sweep of toilets and changing rooms, but “no covert recording devices have been found.”

A Scottish Labour spokesperson said: “Swift action was taken after we became aware of these serious allegations.”
