“Suspend governors’ immunity, impose military rule in troubled states” — Bolaji Akinyemi to Tinubu

Bolaji Akinyemi has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a nationwide state of emergency, suspend governors’ immunity, recall recently retired soldiers, and authorize military administration where necessary to tackle escalating insecurity.

In a press statement, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to adopt sweeping emergency security measures, including suspending the Armed Forces Act provisions that mandate retirement after 35 years of service or at age 60, arguing that “history provides clear precedents” for such action during national crises.

Akinyemi urged the President to “recall, without delay, all officers and soldiers who have retired within the past six months” and launch a nationwide recruitment drive to boost military strength.

He further recommended that Tinubu “declare a nationwide state of emergency,” during which governors’ constitutional immunity should be lifted so any leader under whose watch terrorists operate “freely and with impunity” can be held accountable, including through temporary military administration of affected states.

He also asked the President to establish a military tribunal empowered to impose the death penalty on terrorists and confirmed collaborators, insisting that Nigeria “must not tolerate a situation in which members of terrorist organizations freely appear at social gatherings armed and unchallenged.”
