Survivor of 2024 grenade explosion left without medical support in Borno

A Borno man who lost three brothers in a 2024 grenade explosion that left him paralyzed says he wishes he had died with them, as conflicting security reports and lack of medical support compound his family’s grief.

A 25-year-old Maiduguri man, Mohammed Liman, has been left paralyzed and despondent after surviving a grenade blast that killed his three brothers during breakfast at Kime Filling Station along Baga Road on August 1, 2024. “I’m tired of this life. I wish I had died like my three brothers that day,” Mohammed said. While his family insists security operatives threw the grenade, police denied involvement, blaming Boko Haram insurgents for hijacking the #EndBadGovernance protest. The conflicting accounts have left the family without closure. After eight months of treatment, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital discharged Mohammed despite his condition, allegedly due to disputes between hospital management and security agencies over his records. Previously supported by an international NGO, the family is now struggling with his care. His mother appealed, saying, “All we need now is support, and I’m appealing to anyone.” The tragedy has left the family devastated, trapped between grief and unaddressed questions.
