Sudan landslide kills more than 1,000, destroys village in Marra mountains

A catastrophic landslide struck the remote village of Tarasin in the Marrah Mountains of western Sudan’s Darfur region, killing at least 1,000 people, according to the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A). The disaster occurred on August 31, 2025, after days of torrential rainfall destabilised the steep slopes .

“Initial information indicates the death of all village residents, estimated to be more than one thousand individuals, with only one survivor,” the group said in a statement . The entire settlement was “completely levelled to the ground” .

Darfur’s governor, Minni Minnawi, described the event as a “humanitarian tragedy” and appealed for urgent international support to recover the victims amid challenging conditions .
