State department warns immigrants over posts mocking Charlie Kirk’s killing

The State Department warned it will review immigrants’ legal status if they mock or celebrate conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

The U.S. State Department said Thursday it will examine the legal status of immigrants “praising, rationalizing, or making light” of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s fatal shooting.

Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau stated on X, “In light of yesterday’s horrific assassination of a leading political figure, I want to underscore that foreigners who glorify violence and hatred are not welcome visitors to our country. I have been disgusted to see some on social media praising, rationalizing, or making light of the event, and have directed our consular officials to undertake appropriate action.”

The Trump administration has previously sought immigration reviews of foreign nationals involved in contentious political activities, including pro-Palestinian demonstrations on U.S. campuses. Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was killed Wednesday while speaking at Utah Valley University.

Police said Thursday they believe they have recovered the weapon but the suspect remains at large. Leaders of both parties swiftly condemned political violence after the shooting.
