Stabbing on Royal Caribbean cruise ends with suspect’s death overboard, police say

A violent incident aboard Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas cruise ship left one crew member dead and another injured, police said. On Thursday evening near San Salvador Island in the Bahamas, a 35-year-old South African man allegedly stabbed a 28-year-old South African female colleague multiple times before jumping overboard. The man was later found unresponsive and pronounced dead by medical staff. The woman is in stable condition with upper-body stab wounds.

“Our crew immediately initiated a search and rescue operation, but unfortunately the crew member passed away,” Royal Caribbean stated. “We extend our condolences to the crew member’s family and loved ones. To respect their privacy, we have no additional details to share.”

Passengers reported hearing the emergency “oscar oscar oscar” code before the ship turned around to assist. Authorities have not released the names or a motive. An investigation is ongoing and an autopsy is scheduled. The Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, will return to PortMiami on Saturday.
