Speed violations topped the list of causes for road crashes in Nigeria during the third quarter of 2025, with 2,284 recorded cases, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics and the Federal Road Safety Corps. Despite a 3.9 percent drop from the previous quarter, speeding remained the leading factor, followed by other causes such as wrongful overtaking (201 cases) and dangerous driving (166 cases), while total crashes fell 7.49 percent to 2,434.
A study by the International Journal of Innovation Research & Advanced Studies cited poor enforcement of safety rules and inadequate road maintenance as key reasons for the persistent accidents. The study urged strict policy implementation and recommended that “speed-limiting devices should be installed in all vehicles to reduce the recurrent road accidents due to speeding.” The data also revealed 1,077 fatalities, with males comprising 81 percent of deaths, and the North-Central zone recording the highest crash numbers.
