Human rights activist and former APC presidential aspirant, SKC Ogbonnia, has written to former US President Donald Trump, seeking international attention over an alleged assassination attempt on Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. In the February 27 letter, Ogbonnia described the February 24 incident in Benin City as a serious threat to political safety, claiming gunmen trailed Obi’s convoy and opened fire near the residence of former Edo State Governor John Odigie-Oyegun, damaging vehicles and property.
Ogbonnia raised concerns over security lapses and urged Trump to use his influence to advocate stronger protection for political actors and democratic norms in Nigeria. He warned of a pattern of political intimidation ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that safeguarding opposition figures and voters is essential for a credible democratic process.
