Six soldiers dead, five injured in Borno Boko Haram IED blast

An improvised explosive device (IED), believed to have been planted by Boko Haram or ISWAP militants, killed six soldiers and injured five others on Sunday in Borno State. The explosion occurred along the Damasak–Kareto road as a military convoy on an operational clearance mission was travelling from Maiduguri to Damasak. According to local and security sources, an armoured vehicle leading the convoy ran over the device, triggering a blast that destroyed the vehicle and left a deep crater blocking the road. The injured soldiers were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

A situation report prepared for the United Nations, however, put the death toll at nine, stating that the device was detonated while soldiers were stopped at a camp along the Gubio-Damasak road. A video circulating on social media showed the aftermath of the attack, with the bodies of soldiers lying on the ground. The Nigerian military has yet to respond to requests for comment on the incident.
