Shipping association flags rising stowaway incidents in Nigeria

The Shipping Association of Nigeria (SAN) has expressed concern over persistent stowaway incidents, reporting 2,300 security breaches on vessels in 2025. Chairperson Mrs. Boma Alabi stated this in Lagos, noting criminal access despite payments to security agencies.

Alabi also mentioned that 15 foreign shipping lines in Nigeria face weekly stowaway cases and costly repatriation sanctions. She called on the government to address regulatory pressures, port infrastructure, and customs policies affecting operations.
