Senator Bernie Moreno introduced the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025 to eliminate dual US citizenship, citing concerns over divided loyalties and potentially impacting figures like Melania Trump and many Nigerians.
Senator Moreno has introduced the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025, arguing that allowing Americans to hold dual nationality creates “conflicts of interest and divided loyalties.” The Colombian-born senator, who later renounced his own Colombian citizenship, said: “It was an honor to pledge an Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America and ONLY to the United States of America!… it’s all or nothing. It’s time to end dual citizenship for good.”
If passed, the bill could affect many Nigerians, with DHS data showing that 38,890 Nigerians became naturalized US citizens between 2021 and 2023 making Nigeria the only African country in the top 20. While Nigeria permits dual citizenship for citizens by birth, the US may shift toward stricter rules, especially as President Trump’s earlier executive order targeting birthright citizenship remains stalled in court.
