Senate orders nationwide action on Lagos lead poisoning

The Nigerian Senate has declared a lead-poisoning crisis in Ogijo, a community between Lagos and Ogun East, as a grave public health emergency. This follows alarming reports of extreme lead contamination linked to used battery recycling factories, causing severe health issues among residents, including developmental delays in children.

The Senate commended federal and state governments for shutting down non-compliant factories. They mandated emergency medical teams for free screenings and treatment, alongside comprehensive environmental remediation. Lawmakers also urged stricter national enforcement and the creation of a task force to address industrial pollution.
