Russia condemns US military action in Venezuela, calls it ‘ideological hostility’

Russia has condemned the United States’ military action in Venezuela, saying there was no justification for the attack and accusing Washington of allowing “ideological hostility” to override diplomacy. In a statement on Saturday, the Russian foreign ministry described the development as alarming, noting that Venezuela remains Moscow’s most important ally in South America, even as the Kremlin has stopped short of offering military assistance to Caracas in the event of a wider conflict.

“This morning, the United States committed an act of armed aggression against Venezuela. This is deeply concerning and condemnable,” the ministry said. “The pretexts used to justify such actions are untenable. Ideological hostility has triumphed over businesslike pragmatism.”

The statement did not refer to Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, whom US President Donald Trump said was captured during the operation, but added: “We reaffirm our solidarity with the Venezuelan people,” while noting that there were no reports of Russian citizens being injured in the US strikes.
