RSF commits to ceasefire as U.S., Saudi Arabia, UAE push for peace in Sudan

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced a three-month humanitarian ceasefire following pressure from the United States and Gulf allies, despite recent attacks on army positions.

Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) declared on Monday that it would immediately enter into a three-month humanitarian ceasefire, following international efforts led by U.S. President Donald Trump and supported by the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.

RSF chief General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo stated, “In response to international efforts, chiefly that of His Excellency U.S. President Donald Trump … I announce a humanitarian ceasefire including a cessation of hostilities for three months. We hope the Quad countries will play their role in pushing the other side to engage with this step.”

The announcement comes after the RSF previously accepted a ceasefire but carried out drone strikes on army-controlled territories.

Sudan’s army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, rejected the peace plan, accusing it of favoring the RSF and weakening the army.

The ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023, has devastated Sudan, causing famine, widespread civilian casualties, and ethnic violence, with both Dagalo and Burhan sanctioned by the United States for alleged atrocities.
