Rivers: Fresh crisis as Wike-aligned lawmakers renew clash with Fubara

Political tension has resurfaced in Rivers State barely three months after President Bola Tinubu brokered peace between Nyesom Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Lawmakers loyal to Wike, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, have resumed hostilities, accusing Fubara of neglecting public schools. In a viral video, Amaewhule described the state of education as “a sad commentary,” alleging vandalised facilities and classrooms without teachers.

The crisis deepened on December 5 when Amaewhule and 15 lawmakers defected from the PDP to the APC, reigniting the long-standing power struggle. The Assembly also faulted Fubara for failing to submit commissioner-nominees months after dismissing his former cabinet.

Political actors and party leaders, including the ADC’s Leader Sampson, warned that renewed hostilities would harm residents, while PDP’s Austin Okai said Fubara had been isolated by former allies.
