The United States military is reportedly developing airstrike contingency plans for Nigeria following President Donald Trump’s directive to “prepare to intervene” to protect Christians from terrorist attacks, The New York Times reports.
According to the report, US Africa Command has proposed “heavy,” “medium,” and “light” operational options to the Department of Defense. The most extensive plan involves deploying an aircraft carrier strike group to the Gulf of Guinea, while the least aggressive emphasizes intelligence sharing with Nigerian forces.
Trump earlier threatened to send US troops into Nigeria “guns-a-blazing” over what he described as the mass killing of Christians by Islamist militants.
Responding, President Bola Tinubu dismissed the claim, insisting that “Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty.”
