The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) says its establishment to replace the defunct Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) marks a major overhaul of the country’s revenue administration. Dr Zacch Adedeji, Executive Chairman of NRS, said in a television interview monitored in Abuja that the recent tax reform laws formally changed the name of Nigeria’s apex tax authority from FIRS to NRS. He stressed that the transition is not merely a rebranding exercise but a comprehensive institutional upgrade aimed at modernising the system.
Adedeji explained that the new framework consolidates multiple tax and revenue functions previously scattered across different agencies, introducing a centralised, digitalised, and intelligence-driven approach with stronger emphasis on data integration, automation, and reduced human discretion. He also dismissed claims that the recently enacted tax reform laws were altered after passage, noting that “only the officially gazetted Acts carry legal authority and are binding on taxpayers and administrators.”
