Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has sparked debate after publicly urging men to embrace polygamy, linking his views to his upbringing and ongoing personal experiences.
Renowned Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has advised men to marry multiple women, attributing the stance to his upbringing in a polygamous family and describing it as central to his personal and professional success. Afolayan made the remarks at a watch party for his latest film, Aníkúlápó: The Ghoul Awakens, where a video clip of his comments later went viral across social media platforms.
In the footage, the award-winning filmmaker disclosed that he is currently seeking a divorce, noting that the experience has further reinforced his belief in polygamy. “I am in and out of court seeking a divorce. I don’t mind the toll. So I can marry many wives now,” he said, drawing mixed reactions from attendees and online audiences.
Afolayan also credited his late father’s polygamous lifestyle for his existence and achievements, explaining that he is the seventh child of a man who had ten wives. “Without my father, there wouldn’t be a KAP Village or even Kunle Afolayan. I am the seventh child of my father because he had ten wives,” he said, adding, “For the men, marry many women, or rather be involved with many women. You know why? If my father didn’t, he would not have born me, and that is the honest truth. But today, a few of us are lifting his legacy.”
