Psychiatrist says 60 million Nigerians suffer from mental health disorders

Dr Emmanuel Abayomi of Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, says about 60 million Nigerians are battling mental health conditions.

A psychiatrist at the Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Dr Emmanuel Abayomi, says around 60 million Nigerians are currently battling mental illnesses.

Speaking at a workshop organised by NAS Medical Mission to mark World Mental Health Day, Abayomi expressed concern about the rising cases of mental health issues in Nigeria.

Quoting WHO statistics, he said one in eight people globally suffer from mental conditions, but the figure is higher in Nigeria. “About 60m Nigerians, according to the latest estimate, have a mental health struggle,” he said.

Abayomi listed anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and substance abuse as key factors and urged Nigerians to maintain healthy habits, regular sleep, and social interaction.

He added, “Mental illness is treatable. When people get help, they can recover and live life to their full potential.”

The event also featured experts advocating the inclusion of traditional and community-based approaches in mental health care.
