Promotion for sale? Police officers allegedly paid N5m to get ACP rank under Egbetokun

Allegations have emerged that several senior police officers reportedly paid ₦5 million each to secure promotion to Assistant Commissioner of Police under former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

Fresh allegations of corruption have surfaced within the Nigeria Police Force after claims that some senior officers paid about ₦5 million each to secure promotion to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) under former Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. Documents obtained by SaharaReporters, including an internal police wireless message from Force Headquarters in Abuja, indicate that the promotions were formally communicated through a directive dated February 23, 2026.

The directive, referenced SH.4700/FS/FHQ/ABJ/T.3/40, listed eight officers promoted from Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) to ACP, including Ibrahim Tijani Umaira, Mohammed Amini, Usman Abdul Dimka, Iwok Ndifere, Mohammed I. Musa, Jimoh Shittu, Muhammad S. Ibrahim, and Promise Wosu. It instructed police commands nationwide to formally acknowledge the promotions and convey “Ingenpol’s hearty congratulation to the affected senior officers x Gazette and Force Order publications to follow x Please.” The promotions reportedly took effect between July 28 and August 5, 2025.

Insiders, however, claim the promotions were influenced by payments rather than merit. “These are new special promotions secretly done under Egbetokun. There are allegations that these men paid ₦5 million to get ACP rank while their course mates are left unpromoted,” said a senior officer familiar with the matter. Sources added that the development has caused dissatisfaction among officers who met the necessary criteria but were bypassed for elevation.
