A viral video has sparked public outrage after capturing a policeman demanding ₦5,000 or five litres of fuel from travellers over a suspended vehicle registration requirement.

In the footage posted by @Teeniiola on X.com, the officer is seen confronting motorists along the Benin Bypass, insisting on proof of Electronic Central Motor Registry (ECMR), which the police officially suspended in July 2024.

When informed that enforcement of ECMR was illegal, the officer replied, “You can make call now.” He then demanded, “We’ll go and buy it, that’s 5k,” referring to fuel.

The clip shows the officer asking other travellers for three litres of fuel each, reigniting concerns over police extortion despite leadership directives.

Reacting, Delta State police spokesperson SP Edafe Bright condemned the act, stating on X, “All these Policemen bringing shame to us… they will be sent out of the organisation.”

The Nigeria Police Force is reportedly investigating the incident.
