Police inspector Aminu Ibrahim died in Kano after his AK-47 accidentally discharged while he used a toilet during duty hours
A police inspector identified as Aminu Ibrahim died on Saturday after his rifle accidentally discharged while he was on duty in Kano State.
According to counter-insurgency outlet Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred around 5:40 a.m. in the Hotoro area. Ibrahim, attached to the Hotoro division of the Kano State Police Command, reportedly entered a toilet within Basnaj Global Resources Limited when his loaded AK-47 rifle fired.
Preliminary investigation indicated the officer “accidentally shot himself in the stomach while squatting with his loaded AK-47 rifle hanging around his neck,” Makama quoted a source as saying.
The rifle, with registration number GT 4177, was recovered “cocked and unsafe,” along with an empty shell. Twenty-nine rounds of ammunition were counted, one short of the 30 earlier issued.
Ibrahim was rushed to hospital but was confirmed dead. His body has been deposited in a mortuary for autopsy. Police spokesperson Haruna Abdulahi did not respond to calls or text messages seeking comment.
