A truck driver, Timothy Maamo Tersugh, has spent more than four weeks in police detention without charge after a road accident, prompting a rights group to accuse A.G. Leventis Limited and the police of unlawful and jurisdictionally improper actions.
A truck driver, Timothy Maamo Tersugh, has been detained by the Nigerian Police for over a month without being charged following a road accident in Akwanga, Nasarawa State. Despite police in Jos reportedly confirming the incident was a minor, bailable accident and finding no evidence to support A.G. Leventis Limited’s allegation that the driver diverted beer products, he was transferred to the FCID Annex in Enugu where he remains in custody. The Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network (CRRAN) petitioned the FCID, accusing both the company and the police of “engineering his continued detention,” violating constitutional rights, and acting outside proper jurisdiction.
The group submitted video evidence showing villagers looting the spilled crates and urged authorities to “order the release of the driver, return the matter to Nasarawa authorities if further investigation is needed, and investigate A.G. Leventis for alleged false reporting.” Family members say they have been “kept in the dark” since his transfer, while inquiries to the police and company went unanswered.
