The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has reacted to reports that Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has registered as a member of the All Progressives Congress, saying it wished her well.
Obasanjo-Bello, a former commissioner and senator on the PDP platform, reportedly completed her online registration at Ibogun, Ward 11 of Ifo Local Government Area. Confirming the development, PDP Ogun State Publicity Secretary, Kayode Adebayo, told The PUNCH: “We wish her well.”
A close ally, Biodun Ajayi, also said, “I can confirm to you that Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo on Tuesday at Ibogun Ward 11 of Ifo Local Government completed her online registration as member of our great party, the All Progressives Congress.” A former House of Representatives member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added: “Yes, it is true, she did registration at Ibogun yesterday; I am aware of that.”
When contacted, APC Ogun State Director of Publicity, Femi Nuberu, neither confirmed nor denied the registration, stressing that the party’s ongoing membership exercise was open to all Nigerians aged 18 and above. He said, “Our primary focus at this time is the successful and inclusive conduct of this nationwide exercise, rather than on the individual status of any specific registrant,” adding that the party was encouraged by what he described as a growing influx of new members.
The development has surprised some political observers, given earlier speculation that Obasanjo-Bello might return to the PDP or join the African Democratic Congress, amid campaign billboards and past statements suggesting a possible political comeback.
Speaking previously, Obasanjo-Bello said, “Nobody can say I am actively campaigning for anything,” noting that calls for her return to politics were driven by supporters, while her latest move has renewed speculation about a possible 2027 contest for the Ogun Central senatorial seat.
