PDP summons emergency meeting to halt ‘Hurricane Tinubu’ defections

The crisis intensified after Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire Delta PDP structure defected to the APC, an exodus dubbed ‘Hurricane Tinubu.’

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has summoned an emergency National Working Committee (NWC) meeting for Tuesday, April 29, to address the wave of defections battering its ranks. Acting Secretary Setonji Koshoedo confirmed the meeting will hold at Wadata Plaza, Abuja.

The crisis intensified after Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire Delta PDP structure defected to the APC, an exodus dubbed ‘Hurricane Tinubu.’

A senior PDP NWC member said, “There is nothing the PDP can do to stop those who want to leave. Most of them defect for personal reasons.”

National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu pledged to attend the meeting despite tensions with the PDP Governors Forum. He urged members: “We must ensure that the PDP is peaceful, united, and progressing.”

Party stakeholders, including Timothy Osadolor and Diran Odeyemi, called for broader reconciliation, stressing, “The governors remain the only stakeholders who can design a system to get the party back on track.”

Meanwhile, the APC is set to officially welcome the defectors at an event in Asaba today, with top party leaders in attendance.
