Opposition parties reject amended Electoral Act 2026 signed by Tinubu

Opposition leaders led by Atiku Abubakar rejected the amended Electoral Act 2026, accusing the APC and President Tinubu of introducing controversial provisions and rushing the law ahead of the 2027 elections.

Opposition political leaders in Nigeria have rejected the amended Electoral Act 2026 signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, criticising both its provisions and the process that led to its passage. The opposition, led by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of manipulating the legislative process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Ajuri Ahmed of the New Nigeria Peoples Party criticised the National Assembly’s handling of the amendment and questioned the inclusion of a manual transmission provision despite claims that electronic transmission was feasible nationwide. Opposition leaders also described the manual collation clause as contentious, expressed concern over the speed of presidential assent, and rejected the outcome of the Federal Capital Territory Area Council election, calling it a test the new INEC leadership had failed.
