Grammy-winning artist Burna Boy has asserted his position as the second-greatest African musician of all time, declaring that only the legendary Fela Kuti surpasses him.
The bold claim was made during a casual livestream conversation with Australian influencer Playboymax. “He [Fela Kuti] is the king. He is the only one [African artist] who is greater than me. He is the only one,” Burna Boy stated.
The remark immediately sparked a debate across social media platforms. Supporters praised the singer’s confidence, while critics labeled the boast as an overreach that allegedly overlooks the deep history of African musical legends.
Burna Boy, born Damini Ogulu, has a strong case, however. He secured a Grammy for Best Global Music Album with his 2020 project ‘Twice as Tall’ and has since headlined major international venues like Madison Square Garden. He has amassed over four billion streams worldwide, cementing his role in Afrobeat’s global resurgence.
