ASUU’s National Executive Council will meet on Wednesday to decide whether to proceed with a strike after concluding renegotiation talks with the Federal Government’s Yayale Ahmed-led committee.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities will hold a crucial National Executive Council meeting on Wednesday to determine its next steps as renegotiation talks with the Federal Government conclude.
The talks, reconvened on Monday by the Yayale Ahmed-led committee in a bid to avert a new strike, follow the expiration of ASUU’s one-month ultimatum and growing tension across public universities.
A senior NEC member confirmed that negotiations end Tuesday, after which the union will decide its position amid longstanding demands, including implementation of the 2009 agreement, payment of outstanding salaries and earned allowances, and funding for university revitalisation.
While Education Minister Tunji Alausa insists government has “met nearly all their requirements,” ASUU accuses the administration of a “nonchalant” attitude, as the Nigeria Labour Congress pledges to “fight alongside the academic community” if the demands remain unresolved.
