A 40-year-old Burton man rammed a vehicle into a Grand Blanc church, opened fire on worshippers, killed one person, injured nine, and set the building ablaze before being shot dead by police.
Two people are dead, including the gunman, and nine others are hospitalized after a Sunday morning attack at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, authorities said.
Police Chief William Renye reported that a 40-year-old Burton man drove a vehicle into the McCandlish Road chapel around 10 a.m., then opened fire on hundreds of worshippers. “The shooter is down, we do have multiple victims, the entire church is on fire,” Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said.
Renye said the suspect shot ten people before a confrontation with officers left him dead. One victim later died at a hospital, and several remain in critical condition. The suspect also set the church ablaze, and investigators fear more victims may be found once firefighters deem the building safe.
The Church called the attack a “tragic act of violence,” thanking emergency responders and asking for prayers. FBI and ATF agents joined local police as the search for a motive continues.
