Ogun govt cancels Awujale selection, orders fresh process

The Ogun State Government has cancelled the ongoing selection process for the vacant Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland. The Vice Chairman of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, Prof. Fassy Yusuf, confirmed the development on Wednesday.

The Awujale stool became vacant following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona in July at the age of 91 after a 65-year reign.

In a December 2, 2025 letter signed by the Ijebu Ode Local Government secretary, the ruling house was directed to produce the next Awujale within 14 days.

The Fusengbuwa Ruling House commenced the process, attracting over 60 princes and fixing December 15 for screening, before the state government summoned stakeholders to ensure compliance with chieftaincy laws.

Explaining the decision, Yusuf said the government ordered a restart due to procedural errors. “The meeting with the government was to ensure that everything falls in place,” he said. “The government wants us to strictly adhere to the provisions of the Obas and Chiefs Law regarding the installation of the Awujale.” He added that restarting would prevent litigation.
