Odegbami: Super Eagles’ World Cup chances ‘slim, but not impossible’

Odegbami has warned that Nigeria’s World Cup hopes are slim but achievable if the Super Eagles win crucial qualifiers and rivals falter.

Former Nigerian football legend Chief Patrick Olusegun Odegbami has cautioned that the Super Eagles face an uphill task in qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing their chances as “very slim” but “not impossible.” His assessment comes ahead of Nigeria’s September 6 qualifier against Rwanda in Uyo and a crucial September 9 clash away to South Africa.

South Africa currently tops the group with 13 points and, despite a looming three-point deduction for fielding an ineligible player, would remain in command if they beat Nigeria. Having secured an away draw in the first leg, Bafana Bafana also hold a head-to-head advantage.

“The truth is that our chances are slim. When you look at the results, the matches we have to play and how we have to play them, you will agree it’s difficult,” Odegbami said. He added, “The path is already difficult, but, with a little bit of luck, we may be able to do it.”
