Peter Obi has sued activist Deji Adeyanju for ₦1.5 billion over alleged defamatory social media posts that he claims damaged his reputation.
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has filed a ₦1.5 billion lawsuit against human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, over alleged defamatory statements made against him on social media.
The suit, filed at the State High Court in Onitsha, Anambra State, seeks a judicial declaration that Adeyanju’s comments were “false, baseless, unfounded, malicious, reckless, scandalous, and defamatory.”
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, is asking the court to compel Adeyanju to issue an unreserved public apology across all his social media platforms and in three national newspapers.
According to the court documents, the plaintiff is also seeking “an order compelling the defendant to retract and delete all false and malicious publications” from his verified social media handles, including X, Facebook, and Instagram.
Obi further requested an order of perpetual injunction restraining Adeyanju from making any future defamatory statements against him.
He is demanding ₦500 million in aggravated or exemplary damages and ₦1 billion in general damages for emotional distress and reputational harm allegedly caused by Adeyanju’s remarks, which described him with derogatory labels such as “religious bigot,” “fraud,” and “political prostitute.”
