NSA Ribadu’s office admits supplying arms to Kwara vigilantes

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) has confirmed supplying arms to vigilante elements in Kwara State as part of efforts to support security agencies battling terrorism, banditry and other crimes, especially in difficult terrains. The clarification followed reports that a rifle issued by ONSA was recovered in the state.

In a statement, the Head of Strategic Communications at the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), ONSA, Abu Michael, said the intervention was in line with the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, 2022. He explained that the NCTC “continues to coordinate and support law enforcement, security and intelligence agencies in countering all forms of terrorism in Nigeria.”

Michael said Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategy allows the use of hybrid forces involving regular security personnel and trained auxiliaries such as hunters and vigilantes. He dismissed claims that arms were given to socio-cultural groups, stating, “Claims that the Office of the National Security Adviser has provided arms to any socio-cultural organisation are false and should be disregarded.”
