Noem confirms surge of ICE resources in Chicago

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said more federal resources will be deployed to Chicago for immigration enforcement, sparking pushback from state and city leaders.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem on Sunday confirmed that the Trump administration will expand immigration operations in Chicago, bringing additional federal resources to the city.

“We’ve already had ongoing operations with ICE in Chicago… but we do intend to add more resources to those operations,” Noem said on CBS News’ Face the Nation.

The announcement comes after DHS requested logistical support from Naval Station Great Lakes, about 35 miles north of Chicago. Noem declined to give specifics about the deployment, but noted it was President Trump’s “prerogative” to send National Guard troops if needed.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson criticized the move, citing declining crime rates. Johnson signed an order barring city police from assisting federal immigration enforcement, while Pritzker warned the plan could be tied to attempts to “stop the elections in 2026.”
