The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Ekiti State has issued a forceful rebuttal against allegations of organ harvesting at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), categorically stating that no such illegal act occurred during a recent complex kidney surgery. The association clarified that the removed kidney was a necessary procedure due to a congenital anomaly, was formally handed to the patient’s wife, and was sent for standard pathological evaluation, with all actions adhering to ethical and professional standards.
Beyond defending the medical team, the NMA strongly condemned the hospital’s administration for its disciplinary actions, labeling the dismissal of the lead consultant surgeon and suspension of resident doctors and theatre staff as excessive, disproportionate, and done without due process or fair hearing. The association warned that these actions have severely damaged morale, risking a staff exodus and a collapse in service delivery, and called for the immediate reversal of the sanctions alongside the establishment of an independent expert panel to review the case.
