The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has announced a mandatory prepaid customs duty of $80 on all postal shipments from Nigeria to the United States, effective August 29, 2025, following a new U.S. government executive order.
The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has announced that a mandatory prepaid customs duty of $80 or its naira equivalent will be applied to all postal shipments from Nigeria to the United States, effective August 29, 2025. The new charge excludes letters and documents.
In a public notice on Friday, NIPOST explained that the policy follows a recent U.S. Government Executive Order issued under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which suspends de minimis exemptions for postal shipments worldwide.
“The Nigerian Postal Service wishes to inform our esteemed customers of a recent policy change by the Government of the United States of America,” the notice stated, clarifying that the measure applies to all global postal operators.
NIPOST warned that the change could cause delivery delays due to stricter U.S. customs checks and handling protocols. The agency assured customers it is working with international partners to minimize disruptions and maintain service reliability.
