Nigerian soldiers lament poor welfare, accuse senior officers of neglect

Some Nigerian Army personnel have decried delayed promotions and stagnant allowances, urging Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede to intervene. The soldiers, speaking to SaharaReporters, claimed lower-ranking personnel have endured years without salary or allowance increases.

“Our monthly salary is one of the lowest among security agencies. Feeding our families is now a challenge,” a sergeant said. “After five years on one rank, there’s still no promotion guarantee. Like 20 people will be due for promotion in a unit, then they will now send 4 names, meaning 16 people will wait again till next year, it’s unfair.”

He added, “Our senior officers only care about themselves. Their families live abroad while we have no clear future for our children.”

Earlier this week, protests erupted in Lagos, demanding better welfare for soldiers and police. Retired officers also protested at Force Headquarters in Abuja, alleging they received only 25% of pension deductions after 35 years of service. Protesters carried placards and chanted solidarity songs.
