Nigeria to receive $2.1bn in US aid for Christian health care

Nigeria is set to receive $2.1 billion in health assistance from the United States under the “America First Global Health Strategy,” aimed at supporting Christian health care providers operating in areas affected by violence and displacement. The funding targets essential care delivery amid persistent terror attacks in parts of northern Nigeria.

The programme makes Nigeria the fourth African country enrolled under the strategy, focusing on vaccination, disease prevention, maternal health, and treatment of neglected tropical diseases. Officials say the initiative is designed to strengthen health systems serving vulnerable communities facing insecurity and limited access to care.

According to health authorities, implementation will work through local structures, including the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, to ensure accountability and reach. The support comes as humanitarian groups report increasing pressure on faith-based health facilities responding to displacement and public health emergencies.

The New York Sun reported that the funding is intended to strengthen frontline care delivery, expand vaccination coverage and improve access to basic health services, particularly in vulnerable communities impacted by conflict and humanitarian pressures.
