Nigeria set to become Africa’s first electric vehicle manufacturing nation

Nigeria has signed an MoU with South Korea to launch electric vehicle manufacturing and charging infrastructure as part of its industrial and energy transition strategy.

Nigeria is set to commence electric vehicle manufacturing following the signing of a January 30 MoU between the Federal Government and South Korea’s Asia Economic Development Committee. The agreement covers an EV manufacturing plant and nationwide charging infrastructure, aimed at positioning Nigeria as Africa’s first EV producer under a structured national framework.

The National Automotive Design and Development Council said the project would be phased, starting with assembly before full production of up to 300,000 vehicles annually. “This landmark collaboration aligns with Nigeria’s National Energy Transition Plan and the National Automotive Industry Development Plan,” NADDC said, adding it would boost jobs, technology transfer and clean mobility.

Officials said the initiative supports Nigeria’s push to reduce emissions and revive its automotive industry, which has long relied on imports. Transport authorities view electric mobility as key to cutting urban pollution, while details on the plant’s location, financing and rollout timeline will be announced as implementation progresses.
