Nigeria recalls fighter jet after Benin foils coup attempt… UPDATED

Nigeria recalled its deployed fighter jet after Benin’s security forces regained control and foiled a coup attempt against President Patrice Talon.

Nigeria has withdrawn the fighter jet earlier deployed to the Benin Republic after authorities confirmed that the security situation had stabilised following a brief coup attempt on Sunday. The aircraft, dispatched from Lagos for aerial surveillance, was ordered back to base after intelligence indicated that loyalist forces had regained control. According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the mutiny against President Patrice Talon was “decisively foiled,” with loyalists reclaiming key areas in Cotonou.

The crisis began when mutineers attacked the presidential residence before seizing the national broadcaster, ORTB. Benin’s National Guard and loyal troops surrounded the facility, while officials confirmed ongoing negotiations for the rebels’ surrender. Interior Minister Alassane Seidou said the armed forces had “successfully thwarted” the attempted coup, and the presidency, quoted by AFP, stated that President Talon was unharmed, adding: “The regular army is regaining control. The city and the country are completely secure.”
