The Nigeria Police Force has announced the resumption of enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy, citing security concerns. In a statement on Monday, police public relations officer Benjamin Hundeyin said the decision “follows a careful review of emerging security concerns and the need to ensure the safety of all citizens”. He clarified that no court order restrains the police from enforcing the law.
Hundeyin said the police had voluntarily suspended enforcement in October to allow motorists regularise their documents. “Recent trends, however, reveal a disturbing rise in criminal activities perpetrated with the aid of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted glass,” the statement read, adding that criminals exploit tinted vehicles to conceal identities and commit violent crimes.
Quoting Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, Hundeyin assured that enforcement would be carried out professionally, with respect for citizens’ rights and in line with the law. He urged motorists requiring permits to apply through approved channels. The police said the earlier suspension was done in consideration of Nigerians and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
