Nigeria moves to secure ex-President Jonathan after Guinea Bissau coup

A senior government source says former President Goodluck Jonathan is safe in Guinea Bissau, with Nigeria coordinating efforts to ensure his protection and return following the recent military coup.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has been confirmed safe in Guinea Bissau after the country’s military takeover, according to a senior government source who spoke anonymously. The source said plans are in motion to facilitate Jonathan’s return to Nigeria, noting that a multinational task force—featuring Nigerian personnel—is currently in the country to ensure the safety of Jonathan and other Nigerian officials.

“Nigeria is taking the necessary steps to ensure their security and facilitate their return,” the source stated. The Federal Government has also condemned the coup and called for the restoration of constitutional order.
