Presidential Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has rejected calls by some U.S. lawmakers for Nigeria to abolish Sharia law, insisting that Washington has no authority to demand constitutional amendments from a sovereign nation.
Speaking on Arise Television, he said foreign instructions on Nigeria’s legal framework would violate its sovereignty, noting: “They don’t have the locus… In doing that, it’ll amount to infringing on the territorial integrity and territorial right of a country.”
Bwala argued that even Donald Trump’s threat of possible military intervention contradicts U.S. conventions, stressing that foreign military action is only lawful under invitation, war or a UN mandate.
He reminded critics that Sharia law in 12 northern states is a state-level system permitted under Nigeria’s federal structure. “We differ with them on this idea of amending our constitution… Nigeria is a sovereign state… and we are not Venezuela,” he stated.
